Over the weekend I reorganized the HomeNetworkEnabled forums. It had been six months since inception and I had a little time to analyze what was useful and what wasn't. On the useful front, I realized benchmarks of network performance are useful. With this revelation I added two forums to the LAN Speed Test forum, one for wireless speed test results, and another for wired speed test results. As I started to delve in to it a little more however, I realized some context is definitely in order. In what I can only describe as a geeky epiphany, I ran around the house collecting performance figures on all of our devices. I decided to put this together as a 3-part series. Craftsman just recently released their AssureLink Garage Door Openers which allow you to check and close your garage door via your smartphone. The openers themselves are fairly pricey ($289.99 if you don't want battery backup, $296.99 if you do). Internet connectivity is free the first year, but jumps to $19.99 a year thereafter. Twenty bucks a year seems a little pricey simply for the convenience of seeing if your door is open via your smartphone. If you feel it's something you need, but don't want the extra cost AND you have a little electrical know-how, the tuxgraphics smartphone garage door opener may be just the ticket for you.

TotuSoft has graciously provided Home Network Enabled with licenses for their LAN Speed Test Server and LAN Speed Test v2.0 and I'm happy to announce we will be using it as our official speed testing software going forward. LAN Speed Test v2.0 is said to be more accurate than v1.0 and should give good and consistent baselines for most testing. I won't be revisiting old articles where v1.0 was used, but all articles going forward will use v2.0 and Server where appropriate.
